Online chat etiquette: how to be someone strangers enjoy talking to

24 September 2026 · 3 min read

In an anonymous chat, all the other person knows about you is what you type. No face, no voice, no profile. That makes small habits matter a lot. Here’s how to be the stranger people remember for the right reasons.

Put something into the first message

“hi” forces the other person to do all the work. Give them a hook: an opinion, a question, a tiny detail about your day. “Hi! Stuck in traffic and bored — what’s the best thing you’ve watched recently?” gets a real reply.

Match their energy

If they write long, thoughtful messages, don’t reply with “ok”. If they’re sending quick jokes, don’t answer with a paragraph. Mirroring someone’s pace and tone is the easiest way to make a conversation feel comfortable.

Ask, then actually listen

The best conversationalists ask good follow-up questions. Pick one detail from their answer and dig in: “Wait, you’ve been to Ladakh on a bike? How was the road?” People love talking to someone who is genuinely curious.

Don’t interrogate

Curious is good. Rapid-fire personal questions are not. “Age? City? Male or female? Single?” feels like a form, not a chat, and it makes people uneasy. Let personal details come up naturally — or not at all. Anonymity is part of the point.

Respect language choices

India types in many languages. If your partner writes in Hinglish and you’re more comfortable in English, that’s fine — most people will happily mix. Never mock someone’s English, spelling or accent in text. Everyone is here to talk, not to be graded.

Take “no” gracefully

If someone doesn’t want to talk about a topic, change it. If they want to end the chat, let them. Pushing after a “no” is the fastest way to get reported, and it’s against our Community Guidelines.

Keep it clean

Chatavi is not a place for sexual content. Flirting that makes someone uncomfortable is harassment, even if you meant it as a joke.

Leave kindly

You don’t have to explain why you’re leaving, but a quick “Nice talking to you, going to sleep now 👋” before tapping Next is a small kindness people appreciate.

When it goes wrong

Some people are rude. It isn’t your job to fix them. Don’t argue, don’t insult back — just tap Next, and report if they broke the rules. Your time is better spent on the next conversation.

The one-line version

Be the kind of stranger you’d want to be matched with.
