How to end a chat politely (and when you don’t need to)

Every conversation ends eventually. On anonymous chat, many people just disappear mid-sentence, and it can feel a little abrupt on the other side. You never have to explain yourself, but when a chat was pleasant, a kind goodbye takes five seconds and leaves both of you in a good mood.
When a quick goodbye is nice
If the conversation was friendly and you simply want to move on, a short sign-off works best. A few you can copy:
- “This was really fun, thanks for the chat! Take care 😊”
- “I have to head off now. Good luck with the exams!”
- “Nice talking to you. Hope the rest of your day is great.”
- “Okay, my chai is cold and my mom is calling. Bye, and thanks!”
- “Chalo, I’ll let you go. Have a good night!”
Then tap Next for a new chat, or open the menu at the top and choose End chat if you’re done for now.
When you don’t need to say anything
You owe no goodbye, and no explanation, to someone who:
- is rude, creepy or sexual when you didn’t want that
- keeps asking for personal details, photos or your number
- asks for money or tries to move you to another app
- ignores a “no”
Just leave. If they broke the rules, report them from the menu at the top of the chat; it ends the chat immediately and you won’t be matched again. See our guide on dealing with rude or creepy strangers.
When the conversation is just… flat
Sometimes nobody did anything wrong, the chat simply isn’t clicking. One-word replies, long gaps, no questions back. It’s okay to end these too. A light line keeps it kind:
- “I don’t think either of us is feeling chatty today, haha. Have a good one!”
- “I’ll let you go. Nice meeting you!”
About the Next button
On Chatavi, tapping Next starts a short countdown before the chat actually ends, so you can Undo if you tapped it by mistake. Once it ends, your partner sees that the chat is over and can start a new one straight away.
Remember that chats on Chatavi aren’t saved. Once a chat ends, there is no way to find the same person again. If you had a great conversation, enjoy it for what it was: a nice moment with a stranger.
When you’re on the receiving end
If someone leaves your chat suddenly, try not to take it personally. They may have lost their connection, been called away, or simply wanted a different topic. It happens to everyone. Tap Next chat and meet someone new.
The short version
- Pleasant chat? A one-line goodbye is kind.
- Bad behaviour? Leave without a word, and report if needed.
- Flat chat? A light, friendly exit is fine.
- Don’t overthink endings. Everyone moves on quickly.
