15 conversation starters that actually work with strangers

24 September 2026 · 4 min read

You have been matched. A stranger is waiting. You type “hi”… they type “hi”… and then nothing. Most anonymous chats die in the first thirty seconds, not because the other person is boring, but because the opening gave them nothing to hold on to.

A good opener does two jobs: it tells the other person something small about you, and it asks a question that is easy and fun to answer. Here are fifteen that work.

Light and playful

  1. “Quick question: chai or coffee, and are you willing to defend your choice?” Everyone has an opinion, and it invites a bit of friendly argument.
  2. “What’s one thing you did today that you’re weirdly proud of?” It sounds personal but it isn’t. The answers are often funny.
  3. “If you could teleport anywhere in India for the weekend, where are you going?” Travel dreams are an easy topic, and you learn a lot about someone from the answer.
  4. “Rate your day out of 10. I’m at a 6 — Monday energy.” Sharing your own number first makes it easy to reply.
  5. “Settle a debate for me: is pineapple on pizza a crime?” Silly, low-stakes and instantly relatable.

For when you share an interest

If Chatavi matched you on an interest tag, use it. It is the fastest way into a real conversation.

  1. Cricket: “Be honest — who’s the most overrated player right now?”
  2. Movies / Bollywood: “What’s a film everyone loves that you secretly can’t stand?”
  3. Anime: “What anime would you show someone who has never watched one?”
  4. Coding: “What’s the worst bug you’ve ever spent hours on?”
  5. Exams / UPSC: “Which subject is currently ruining your life, and how can I help you complain about it?”

Curious and a little different

These stand out because most people never ask them.

  1. “What’s a small thing that instantly makes your day better?”
  2. “Mountains trip or beach trip — and who are you taking with you?”
  3. “What’s the last song you played on repeat? No judgement. Okay, a little judgement.”

Deeper, when the vibe is right

Once a conversation has warmed up, these can take it somewhere memorable.

  1. “What’s something you changed your mind about in the last year?”
  2. “What would you do if you knew nobody would judge you?” This one works especially well in an anonymous chat, where nobody knows who you are.

Openers to avoid

  • “asl?” — It asks for personal details right away and sounds like a bot. Many people skip immediately.
  • “hi” and nothing else — It puts all the effort on the other person.
  • Asking for Instagram, Snapchat or a phone number — It is against Chatavi’s rules, and it makes people uncomfortable. If you both want to stay in touch, that decision can come much later.

One last tip

Ask follow-up questions. The fastest way to be a great chat partner is to actually listen: pick one detail from their answer and ask about it. “You said Manali — have you been, or is it on the list?” turns a Q&A into a conversation.

Now go try one. Someone is waiting.
